Fight Club, Howard Style
Frequent contributor to TGR, Charles Saunders has just posted one of his old
articles about Robert E. Howard's boxing stories on his blog. The title is
"Ringside at Cross Plains."  It's a bit of speculation about the real-life fighters
who may have served as models for REH's ring warriors. If nothing else, it is a
fun look at the past.  It's a bit of speculation about the real-life fighters who
may have served as models for some of REH's ring warriors. Of course, Charles
says he had a lot more fun writing
"Fists of Cross Plains."

After Howard Days, Head North to Columbus, Ohio for
PulpFest
Mike Chomko, a good friend of TGR, is one of the main organizer of the
premiere Pulp magazine event of the year.  If you only one make it to one
convention this year, make it
PulpFest. The event runs Friday, July 31st
through Sunday, August 2nd at the Ramada Plaza Hotel and Convention Center
n Columbus, Ohio.  Edgar Award-winning writer, editor, and publisher Otto
Penzler will be the Guest of Honor at this year’s PulpFest.  Otto, whose recent
anthology
The Black Lizard Big Book of Pulps has done more to renew
interest in Golden Age pulp fiction than any mainstream publication in recent
history, is a perfect GoH for a show like PulpFest in that he is also a world-
class collector of crime fiction, many of whose most notable authors—including
Dashiell Hammett, Raymond Chandler, Cornell Woolrich, Erle Stanley Gardner,
and John D. MacDonald—toiled in the pulp vineyards before achieving
mainstream success with major publishers.  Sounds like PulpFest is the place
to be if you are an aficionado or fan of the Pulps.

New Index Guide to REH's Verse
Explore the poetry of Robert E. Howard with this index guide to his verse from
the
Robert E. Foundation Press. The index can be used to locate specific names
and places, even obscure words. It contains many categories such as ANIMALS,
WEAPONS, TREES, and more, so that these words and related subject words
can be easily explored. For example, under the listing for ANIMAL are all of the
animals Howard mentions in his verse, from APE to WOLF, and everything in
between. Each word is followed by a list of the poems in which that word
appears. Many words also show descriptive adjectives that highlight Howard’s
impressive ability to create powerful images. The index also contains a list of
themes like WANDERLUST and HISTORY for readers interested in a particular
topic. The book was designed with
The Collected Poetry of Robert E. Howard
in mind, but can be used with any of Howard’s verse collections. There’s even a
page number guide keyed to the major collections to help locate the poems. All
this and more is contained in
The Wordbook.

A preview of
The Wordbook is available at The Foundation's Lulu Press web
page. Non-members can purchase the book there for $22.99; Lulu’s shipping
