A Tribute to Leon Nielsen
On July 6th a lamp expired.  Howard fan and scholar Leon Nielsen passed away.
Leon always bought issues of my zine and contacted me in the fall of 2005 about
writing a Foreword for his bibliography-biography of Howard.  I was flattered that
he asked and set about writing it while also providing some input on the copy of
the manuscript he sent me.  Soon we were corresponding regularly and I learned
of his battle with cancer.  During this period, the cancer came back with a
vengeance and Leon was in for several rounds of chemotherapy.  He never
complained, but steadily vowed to beat it, while in the back of his mind he must
have known how high the odds were.  He was a devoted husband and father and
had accomplished many things in his 70 years, and I am glad he was able to
complete his Howard book, which he loved dearly working on.  Barbara Baum said
she spoke with his wife during some trying times and she told Barbara that Leon
was afraid he wouldn’t be able to finish the book before the cancer overtook him.
Now that his work is done, he can rest easy.  Lord knows he’s earned it.

Here is a link to Leon's
Obituary and one to Leon's "The Image of Conan" article
that appears in the current issue of
REH: Two-Gun Raconteur.

Conan of the Movies?
No this isn't the actual poster for the new Conan movie, just something I found
online that looks like it was generated by a wishful foreign Arnold/Conan fan.
Recently Warner Bros. let their option on the Conan movie lapse, so its up for
grabs yet again. Richard Rodriquez was suppose to be developing a Conan film,
but decided to create his "masterpiece"
Grindhouse instead. Some masterpiece; it
barely lasted a week in theaters. Vanity projects generally don't go over too big
with the public. If I want to watch an 1970's exploitation movie, I'll just rent or buy
one of the originals.

A Fanzine Feeding Frenzy
Dennis McHaney is a one man wrecking crew on eBay these days, snagging
exorbitant prices for publishing oddities from early in his career.   Currently a copy
of his very first issue of a small, odd-sized mimeographed affair, bound with tape
and cardboard is knocking on the door of $700.00.  That's more than I paid for my
first car! Meanwhile, a copy of Cryptic's
Lewd Tales, a thin booklet of bawdy Howard
tales, went for $89.00 while a copy of Glenn Lord's classic collectible
Etchings in
Ivory
went for only $78.45.  Where will the madness end?  I guess when collectors
run out of money, or when their spouses catch on and put a stop to it.  Of course,
I'm not speaking from personal experience on that last one.

UPDATE: This copy of The Howard Review #1 sold for a whopping $877.77!  That has to
be a world record price for a Howard fanzine, heck any fanzine.
