Pulp Fiction
Here is an update on this great Summer convention:

Edgar Award-winning writer, editor, and publisher Otto Penzler has been chosen
to be the Guest of Honor at this year’s PulpFest, a convention for collectors and
devotees of vintage pulp fiction, which will be held July 31 through August 2 at
the Ramada Plaza Hotel and Convention Center in Columbus, Ohio.

Be sure and check out the PulpFest
website for all the details. If you only
attend one pulp convention this year, this is the ONE to be at!

Imaro: The Giant Kings/Rwandan Genocide Issue
When Charles Saunders prepared the first volume of a new series of Imaro tales
for publication in 2006, he had a bit of a quandary.  In a case of life imitating
fiction, events portrayed in "Slaves of the Giant-Kings" (published first in the
1970's and then in DAW's
Imaro in 1981) eerily mirrored the real life 1994
tragedy of the massacre of thousands of Hutu by the Tutsi.  Ultimately. Charles
replaced "Giant Kings" with a new story.  Read his thoughts
here, along with his
response to a fan who took umbrage to his decision to delete the controversial
story from the series.

Slim Pickins in 2009
With the demise of The Cimmerian and the publication of Collected Poetry, not
much else appears to be on the horizon for 2009.  No Del Rey book is
forthcoming this year, but one is promised for
next year.  Granted a new issue of
The Dark Man just appeared, but that means a long, long wait for the next one.
Project Pride will soon publish a
small volume of Howard poetry, but even that
won’t be enough for a voracious Howard fans appetite.  Also, Subterranean Press
is doing a hardcover version of
Volume 1 of The Best of Robert E. Howard, but
given the book has appeared in softcover, I doubt many will be picking it up.
Here’s hoping something unexpected will come along, or at the very least, next
year will be much more fruitful.

The End of an Era
Sadly, Leo Grin has ceased publication of The Cimmerian after five years and
35 issues. Leo mailed out the final two 2008 issues and the index for Volume 5
to subscribers last weekend. It goes without saying that it will leave a huge void
in Howard fandom.

For now, the blog will continue and you can still order back issues, but do so
soon -- Leo says they will only be available for a few months.
